Bordeaux Theme - Virtual Tasting (zoom)

We are going to one of our favourite's regions in the world, and explain the differences between two areas in Bordeaux: St Julien and Pomerol. We will also taste a sweet wine, Sauternes!

We will present the wines and the appelation for about 40 minutes, folllowed by questions and answers for 20 minutes. We will start at 6 pm GMT.

We will taste three different wines from a region we have not discussed before in the club, but which has some fantastic varieties and unique styles.

This region is known for very distinctive and fresh wines.  If you like fruity wines, this one is for you! 

We will explain the wines and the region for approximately 40 minutes, then have 20 minutes of questions and answers. We will start at 6 pm GMT.

We will taste 3 different wines , all 100% Pinot Noir but coming from different regions, to experience the differences and similarities between them. 

We will explain the climates and grower choices in each case.

The wines will be presented for 40 minutes followed by questions and answers for 20 minutes. We will start at 6 pm GMT.

Deborah Fleming: 750k through wine countries!

Deborah Fleming has an unusual double track career : working as an International Organisational Development Consultant and Business Psychologist, while also being part of the Costa family who produce wines in the Ribatejo Portugal.  She was ex-secretary of the Oxford University Wine Circle and completed her WSET in 2009.


Deborah's day job is about building highly performing Change Teams that are resilient and adaptable to change. She does this by applying psychodynamic and gestalt theory to work with Leadership Teams and groups.

She researched Personality & Wine resulting in one of her most popular corporate engagements: the “MBTI & Wine Tasting” which she has delivered to over 800 people.

Just recently Deborah has finished the Alpe Adria 750km solo hike for charity through 3 great wine regions (why not!):  Austria, Slovenia and Italy.   We are all very impressed by this and she can tell us about her trip , together with these 3 wine regions, and her learning from her adventure.  She is the only woman in the UK to complete the Alpe Adria solo and unaided this year.

Blind tasting: Know Your Grapes

To start the first few months of the year, we thought of challenging oursleves with a blind tasting again by trying to guess typical international variety such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc  as well as some of the most famous wine regions. Come and join us to learn how to assess a wine blind and how to come to a conclusion- or come just for the fun of the challenge!

We will taste a few typical wines and you will be able to exchange, learn wine tasting technics, grape variety specificity by tasting wines that represent a region and are commonly called "typical and representative" of their area.

So don't hesitate to challenge yourself and have fun in the bleak of February with The London Women and Wine Club!

Jane Eyre: From Aussie to Beaune!

Jane Eyre is one of those women capable of changing everything in their life. Originally from Australia, Jane went from a warm immense country where she worked as a hairdresser to travel the world and finally to start a completely new career in one of the most prestigious and traditional wine areas of the world: cold and rainy Burgundy.  Come and discuss with her how she managed to embrace all these changes and her philosophy for producing brilliant wines that can challenge any traditionally made Burgundy wines and how vintage variation is a constant risk in a small business like hers! Her production is around 20 barrels a year, so we are very lucky to taste her wines.

We will taste a sparkling and 5 of her delicious wines.

Maureen Downey and fake wines

Combating wine fraud is part and parcel of Maureen’s appreciation of the hard work, skill and artistry that goes into creating great wine. Struck by passionate collectors’ needs for qualified advisory services with their wine collections, Maureen founded Chai Consulting in 2005 to help them focus on their individual needs and passions.

With over 20 years of in depth wine industry experience, Maureen Downey stands out as an independent expert on fine and rare wine, and the foremost authority on counterfeit wine and has compiled the largest database on the subject in the world. Specializing in authentication and valuation, Maureen has inspected hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of wine in the course of advising the world’s top collectors, auction houses, wine merchants, restaurants and hotels. 

Maureen has also advised the FBI and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) in a number of high profile cases. She worked closely with the FBI on the Rudy Kurniawan case, advising them for many years in the initial investigation and in the subsequent lead up to trial. 

Today she is an active wine judge participating in international wine and spirit competitions in the US and abroad. She has her Diploma in Wines & Spirits from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust in London, and is a Certified Wine Educator. She also is a Certified Spanish Wine Educator an International Bordeaux Tutor, and is accredited by the French Government as a French Wine Scholar and Instructor. As a columnist for Wine-Searcher.com, Maureen continually educates collectors and the public about wine collection, wine fraud, and how to avoid fake wines, among other topics. In December 2012, industry magazine Drinks Business named Maureen as one of the “Top 50 Most Powerful Women in Wine”.

Prior to joining the Institute, she was a researcher at Chatham House, the leading foreign policy think tank, and has worked at the European Commission and NATO in Brussels.
